| Description: | Conquistador Pedrarías Dávila founded Panamá Viejo in 1519; it is America’s oldest European settlement on the Pacific coast. The town marks the transfer of European ideals of town planning, which is depicted in its layout on a rectilinear grid. Deserted in the mid-17th century, a ‘new town’ (the ‘Historic District’) replaced it; the younger area has also preserved its primary street plan, its architecture and a curious blend of Spanish, French and early American styles.
