Description: | The Portuguese founded the city of Colonia del Sacramento in 1680 on the Río de la Plata; it held a strategic importance in resisting the Spanish. The founders, in the end, lost it after quarreling over it for a century. The well-preserved urban landscape successfully demonstrates the synthesis of Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial styles. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available. | |
