Description: | Siena is the quintessence of a medieval city. The rivalry with Florence was pursued even in the area of urban planning. The inhabitants preserved their city's Gothic appearance, acquired between the 12th and 15th centuries, throughout successive centuries. The Sienese work of Duccio, the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini influenced not just the course of Italian, but also European art in general. Built around the Piazza del Campo, the entire city of Siena was formulated as a work of art - unified with its surrounding landscape. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available. | |
