Description: Matera is located in the southern region of Basilicata. The inscribed site is the most exceptional, intact example of a troglodyte settlement within the Mediterranean region; it is perfectly tailored to its terrain and ecosystem. The first populated zone dates back to the Palaeolithic; settlements of later periods illustrate momentous stages of human history. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the "Sassi di Matera" (meaning "stones of Matera"). The Sassi originate from a prehistoric (troglodyte) settlement, and are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy. --Wikipedia.
