Description: This area, during the 16th century, was considered as the world's largest industrial complex. The site is composed of the colonial town with the Casa de la Moneda; the Church of San Lorenzo; the Cerro Rico industrial monuments, where an intricate system of aqueducts and artificial lakes provides the water; several patrician houses; and the barrios mitayos (the areas where the workers lived). The extraction of silver ore is delivered by a series of hydraulic mills. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
