Description: | These Haitian monuments were erected in beginning of the 19th century - when Haiti declared its independence. Being the first monuments to be constructed by black slaves upon gaining their freedom - the Palace of Sans Souci, the buildings at Ramiers and, particularly, the Citadel are a universal representation of liberty. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available. | |
