Description: The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, previously known as Victoria Terminus in Mumbai, is an exceptional example of an Indian take on Victorian Gothic Revival architecture, where it blends with themes that stem from Indian traditional architecture. British architect’s F.W. Stevens’ designed building became the symbol of Bombay-the major international mercantile port of India-portraying it as the ‘Gothic City’. With construction beginning in 1878, the terminal was built over a period of ten years keeping in line with a High Victorian Gothic design rooted in late medieval Italian models. Elements that are reminiscent of traditional Indian palace architecture are: the remarkable stone dome, turrets, pointed arches, and eccentric ground plan. The site is an outstanding example of the encounter of two cultures; British architects collaborated with Indian craftsmen to incorporate Indian architectural tradition and idioms, thus fashioning a new style unique to Bombay. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
