Description: 1,500 metres above sea-level, 116 ha of swamps make up the Kuk Early Agricultural Site in New Guinea’s southern highlands. Through archaeological excavation we have discovered that the landscape was a retrieved wetland constantly worked for 7,000, and possibly even for 10,000 years. The site encloses well-preserved archaeological remains that illustrate the technological leap which altered plant use to agriculture about 6,500 years ago. This instance outstandingly shows the agricultural practice transformation over time, from cultivation mounds to wetland draining through to the use of wooden tools for burrowing of ditches. Kuk is among the world’s few where archaeological evidence insinuates autonomous agricultural development and alteration in agricultural practice over such a extended period of time. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
