Description: The Cilento is a landscape of exceptional cultural value. During the prehistoric and medieval periods the site used to be a key route for trade, and also for cultural and political interaction, the area's historical evolution is vividly portrayed within the dramatic groups of sanctuaries and settlements along its three east–west mountain ridges. The Cilento also acted as a border line between the Greek colonies of Magna Graecia and the indigenous Etruscan and Lucanian populace. The site houses the remains of Paestum and Velia - two major cities from classical times. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Paestum is the classical Roman name of a major Graeco-Roman city in the Campania region of Italy. It is located in the north of Cilento, near the coast about 85 km SE of Naples in the province of Salerno, and belongs to the commune of Capaccio. --Wikipedia.
