Description: In 1562 Emmanuel-Philibert, Duke of Savoy, transferred his capital to Turin, and embarked on an immense series of building projects, which were carried on by his successors; his goals were to exhibit the power of the ruling house. Having been designed and decorated by the leading architects and artists of the time, this exceptional complex of buildings radiated out from the Royal Palace in the 'Command Area' of Turin into the neighbouring countryside to embrace various country residences and hunting lodges. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
