Description: From the 8th century to 1805 when it was secularized, the Convent of St Gall was among Europe’s greatest and most important Carolingian monasteries. It possesses one of the world’s richest and oldest libraries, which holds valuable manuscripts like the earliest-known architectural plan depicted on parchment. The area surrounding the convent was rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1755 and 1768. The cathedral and the library stand as the highlights of this extraordinary architectural center, revealing uninterrupted activity that lasted 12 centuries. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
The Abbey of St. Gall (German: Sankt Gallen) was for many centuries one of the chief Benedictine abbeys in Europe. It is located in the city of St. Gallen in present-day Switzerland. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
