Description: Ouro Preto (Black Gold), founded in the late 17th century, was the central point of the gold rush as well as Brazil's golden age in the 18th century. Though the city's influence declined with the exhaustion of the gold mines in the 19th century, its many churches, bridges and fountains still stand as a testimony to area’s past prosperity, and Ouro Preto’s surviving examples of sculptor Aleijadinho work testify to his exceptional Baroque talent. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Vila Rica do Ouro Preto is a city in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, a former colonial mining town located in the Serra do Espinhaço mountains and designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its outstanding Baroque architecture. --Wikipedia.
