Description: An immense limestone plateau towers above the island of Öland’s southern tip, positioned in the Baltic Sea. Tailoring their lifestyle to the physical constrictions of the island, humans have inhabited this area for some five thousand years. As a result, the site holds a unique landscape that is copious with indication of constant human settlement dating from prehistoric times and stretching all the way to the present day. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Öland is an island in the Baltic Sea, located off the coast of Småland. At 1,342 km² it is the second largest Swedish island, after Gotland. Administratively, it is now part of Kalmar County, (Kalmar län). Historically, however, Öland (or Latin Oelandia) formed one of the Provinces of Sweden (landskap). --Wikipedia.
