Description: The Walled City of Baku was built on a site inhabited since the Palaeolithic period, and it reveals traces of its various unremitting populations: Zoroastrian, Sasanian, Arabic, Persian, Shirvani, Ottoman, and Russian. The Maiden Tower (Giz Galasy) was built in the12th-century over earlier structures which date back to the 7th-6th centuries BC. Icheri Sheher, the Inner City, still retains a great deal of its 12th-century defensive walls. The site’s 15th-century Shirvanshahs' Palace is a prized possession among Azerbaijan's architecture. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
