Description: Founded in the 17th century as a French colonial settlement, Saint-Louis saw urbanization in the mid-19th century. From 1872 to 1957 it served as the capital of Senegal and held a significant cultural and economic role in the whole of West Africa. Saint-Louis has a unique form and character due to its location on an island at the mouth of the Senegal River, its standard town plan, its quay system, and the distinguishing colonial architecture. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Saint-Louis, or Ndar as it is called in Wolof, is the capital of Senegal's Saint-Louis Region. Located in the northwest of Senegal, near the mouth of the Senegal River, and 200 miles north of Senegal's Capital City Dakar, it has a population officially estimated at 176,000 in 2005. Saint-Louis was the capital of the French colony of Senegal from 1673 until independence in 1960. From 1920 to 1957 it also served as capital of the neighboring colony of Mauritania. --Wikipedia.
