| Description: | The Orthodox Monastery of St Catherine is situated at the bottom of Mount Horeb which is where Moses (according to the Old Testament records) received the Tablets of the Law. Muslims recognize and revere the mountain as Jebel Musa. Three world religions, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, consider this entire area to be sacred. The Monastery, which was founded in the 6th century, is the oldest Christian monastery still being used for its original intended purpose. The Monastery houses exceptional collections of early Christian manuscripts and icons; the site’s walls and buildings are of vast significance to Byzantine architectural studies.
