Description: The historic town of Mostar spans a deep valley of the Neretva River. During the 15th and 16th century the town developed as an Ottoman frontier town and continued to grow during the Austro-Hungarian period in the 19th and 20th centuries. Known for its old Turkish houses, Mostar has also come to be known for its Stari Most (Old Bridge), after which it was named. The Old Bridge (designed by the renowned architect Sinan) as well as most of the historic town were destroyed in the conflict of 1990. The international scientific committee established by UNESCO has made major contributions towards the city’s repair, which allowed for the recent rebuilding of the Old Bridge, and the restoration of many of the edifices in the Old Town. The area surrounding the Old Bridge encompasses pre-Ottoman, eastern Ottoman, Mediterranean and western European architectural features, and can proudly classified as an exceptional example of a multicultural urban settlement. The reconstructed Old City of Mostar and its Old Bridge stand as an emblem for reconciliation, international collaboration and can testify of the coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic and religious communities. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
