Description: Allegedly this small island of Patmos in the Dodecanese is where the writing of the Gospel and the Apocalypse took place, by the hand of St John the Theologian. In the late 10th century a monastery was built there honouring the 'beloved disciple' and has since been a great place of pilgrimage as well as Greek Orthodox learning. The fine monastic set of buildings dominates the island. The associated old settlement of Chorá encloses countless religious and secular buildings. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian (also called Monastery of Saint John the Divine) is a Greek Orthodox monastery founded in 1088 in Chora on the island of Patmos. UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage site. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
