Description: The 140,000 ha Sundarbans mangrove forest, that lies on the Bay of Bengal, on the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers, is one of the largest such forests in the world. A complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and petite islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests intersect the site. The area presents an excellent example of ongoing ecological processes, and is notorious for its wide range of fauna, among which there are 260 bird species, the Bengal tiger and other endangered species like the Indian python and the estuarine crocodile. The site neighbors the Indian World Heritage site of Sundarbans (inscribed in 1987). --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
