Description: Since the 15th century, Edinburgh has been the Scottish capital. Its two distinct areas are the Old Town, which is dominated by a medieval fortress, and the neoclassical New Town, whose progress as of the 18th century had a broad influence on urban planning in much of Europe. The city holds a unique character through the harmonious juxtaposition of these two distinct historic areas, each boasting numerous eminent buildings. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
The Old Town of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has preserved its medieval plan and many Reformation-era buildings. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
