Description: In the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (occupying about one-fifth of the Ituri forest) lies The Okapi Wildlife Reserve. The reserve and forest are a part of the Congo River basin which is one of Africa’s largest drainage systems. The reserve is the habitat of several threatened species of primates and birds and it houses about 5,000 of the estimated 30,000 okapi still surviving in the wild. The site comprises some dramatic scenery, among which are the waterfalls on the Ituri and Epulu rivers. Traditional nomadic pygmy Mbuti and Efe hunters inhabit the reserve. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
The Okapi Wildlife Reserve is a World Heritage Site in the Ituri Forest in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, near the borders with Sudan and Uganda. At a size of approximately 14,000 km², it covers approximately one fifth of the area of the forest. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
