Description: The Royal castle of Kronborg at Helsingør (Elsinore), found on a strategically significant site controlling the Sund (the stretch of water sandwiched between Denmark and Sweden), is of vast symbolic value to the Danish people. It played a key part in the northern European history of the 16th-18th centuries. The construction for the exceptional Renaissance castle began in 1574, and the late 17th century witnessed the reinforcing of the castle defences-according to the canons of the period's military architecture. Notorious in the world- as Elsinore, the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet, the site has remained intact to the present day. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Kronborg Castle is situated near the town of Elsinore (Danish Helsingør) on the extreme tip of Zealand at the narrowest point of the Oresund (Danish Øresund), the sound between Denmark and Sweden. In this part, the sound is only four kilometres wide, hence the strategic importance of maintaining a fortress at this location. The castle has for centuries been one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and was added to UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list on November 30, 2000. --Wikipedia.
