Description: | Antigua is the capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala, and it was founded in the early 16th century. Located 1,500 m above sea-level, the site lies in an earthquake-prone region, which has largely impacted its history - Antigua was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1773 though its major monuments have preserved as ruins. The city, which was built on a grid pattern inspired by the Italian Renaissance, in the space of under three centuries, acquired a number of outstanding monuments. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
La Antigua Guatemala (commonly referred to as just Antigua or La Antigua) is a city in the central highlands of Guatemala famous for its well-preserved Spanish Mudéjar-influenced Baroque architecture as well as a number of spectacular ruined churches. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Antigua Guatemala serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of the same name. It also serves as the departmental capital of Sacatepéquez Department. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
