| Description: | Antigua is the capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala, and it was founded in the early 16th century. Located 1,500 m above sea-level, the site lies in an earthquake-prone region, which has largely impacted its history - Antigua was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1773 though its major monuments have preserved as ruins.
