Description: In the thick of the Southern Ocean sit the Heard and McDonald Islands, located approximately 1,700 km from the Antarctic and 4,100 km south-west of Perth. Observation opportunities for ongoing geomorphic processes and glacial dynamics, the islands are the only volcanically active sub-Antarctic islands, thus providing 'an open window into the earth'. The Heard and McDonald Islands are absent of alien plants, animals or even human impact-a rare pristine island ecosystem. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Heard Island and McDonald Islands (abbreviated as HIMI) are uninhabited, barren islands located in the Southern Ocean, about two-thirds of the way from Madagascar to Antarctica, or 7718 km due south of Rajapur, Maharashtra. They have been territories of Australia since 1947, and contain the only two active volcanoes in Australian territory, one of which, Mawson Peak, is the highest Australian mountain. The group's size is 372 km² in area. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
