| Description: | San Gimignano delle belle Torri' stands in Tuscany, 56 km south of Florence. Pilgrims travelling to or from Rome on the Via Francigena used the site as an important relay point. Around 72 tower-houses (some as high as 50 m) were built in the town by the ruling patrician families as symbols of their wealth and power. Even though merely 14 have survived, San Gimignano still retains its feudal atmosphere and appearance. | San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in Tuscany, Italy, about a 35-minute drive northwest of Siena or southwest of Florence. It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which may be seen from several miles outside the town.
