Description: San Gimignano delle belle Torri' stands in Tuscany, 56 km south of Florence. Pilgrims travelling to or from Rome on the Via Francigena used the site as an important relay point. Around 72 tower-houses (some as high as 50 m) were built in the town by the ruling patrician families as symbols of their wealth and power. Even though merely 14 have survived, San Gimignano still retains its feudal atmosphere and appearance. The town also houses some 14th- and 15th-century Italian art-masterpieces. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town in Tuscany, Italy, about a 35-minute drive northwest of Siena or southwest of Florence. It is mainly famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which may be seen from several miles outside the town. The town also is known for the white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, grown in the area. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
