Description: Conceived as an amphitheatre-Mystras, the 'wonder of the Morea', was built around a fortress which was erected by William of Villehardouin, the prince of Achaia, in 1249. After a successive history of re-conquest by the Byzantines, and occupation by the Turks and the Venetians, the city was deserted in 1832. The abandoned city now consists of a breathtaking series of medieval ruins, sitting within a beautiful landscape. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Mystras (also Mistra, Mystra and Mistras Greek: Μυστράς, Μυζηθράς Mizithras or Myzithras in the chronicle of Morea) was a fortified town in Morea (the Peloponnesus), on Mt. Taygetos, near ancient Sparta. It lies approximately eight kilometres west of the modern town of Sparti. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
