Description: Covering an area of 126.4 km2 the site is found within a huddle of forested granite hills high up the plateau of central Malawi; the area includes Central Africa’s most prosperous concentration of rock art on 127 sites. They reveal the relatively rare tradition of farmer rock art, as well as BaTwa hunter-gatherer paintings as they had populated the area as of the Late Stone Age. The area has seen ancestors of Chewa agriculturalists since the late Iron Age, whose descendents practiced rock painting until well into the 20th century. The rock art holds symbols which are strongly related with women, and still retain cultural significance amongst the Chewa. The sites themselves are to this day actively allied with ceremonies and rituals. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
