Description: Palenque is a first-rate example of a Mayan sanctuary dating from the classical period; it experiences its peak between A.D. 500 and 700, when it saw its influence reach all through the basin of the Usumacinta River. The buildings of the city hold a delicate elegance and craftsmanship, their Mayan mythological themes lightly sculpted into exterior reliefs, all reveal this civilization’s creative genius. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Palenque is a Maya archeological site near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, located at 17°29′0″N, 92°2′59″W about 130 km south of Ciudad del Carmen (see map). It is a medium-sized site, much smaller than such huge sites as Tikal or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings the Maya produced. --Wikipedia.
