Description: The enormous and perfect crater of Ngorongoro reveals a great permanent concentration of wild animals. The deep-lake filled crater of Empakaai and the active volcano of Oldonyo Lenga stand adjacent to Ngorongoro. Excavations of the not-far Olduvai Gorge have concluded in the discovery of our more remote ancestors, Homo habilis. The area also houses Laitoli Site, which is one of the chief settings of early hominid footprints that date back 3.6 million years. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area or NCA is a conservation area situated 180 km west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. It is 8,288 km² - about the size of Crete. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
