Description: Built shortly before the Christian era, the Pont du Gard allowed the almost 50 km long aqueduct of Nîmes cross the Gard river. The almost 50 m high, three level bridge (longest measuring 275 m) was designed by Roman architects and hydraulic engineers who in so doing created a technical as well as an artistic masterpiece. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
