Description: In the Iberian peninsula in the tiny Kingdom of the Asturias, the 9th century witnessed the flame of Christianity being kept alive. A ground-breaking pre-Romanesque architectural style was created here that was a major factor in the development of the peninsula’s religious architecture. Its key accomplishments can be observed in the churches of Santa María del Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo, Santa Cristina de Lena, the Cámara Santa and San Julián de los Prados, within and surrounding the ancient capital city of Oviedo. The incredible modern-day hydraulic engineering structure known as La Foncalada is closely associated with them. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Oviedo (Asturian: Uvieu) is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain. It is also the name of the municipality that contains the city. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
