Description: The site of Nessebar, located on a rocky peninsula on the Black Sea, is over 3,000-years old and originally acted as a Thracian settlement (Menebria). The city became a Greek colony in the early 6th century B.C. The city currently retains its acropolis, a temple of Apollo, an agora and a wall from the Thracian fortifications, most of which date back to the Hellenistic period. The Stara Mitropolia Basilica and the fortress, together with other monuments, date from the Middle Ages, at which time this was one of the most important Byzantine towns on the western Black Sea coast. Typical of the Black Sea architecture of the 19th century are the wooden houses built in this period. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
