Description: The Spanish founded Havana in 1519, and by the 17th century it had developed into one of the Caribbean's main hubs for ship-building. While nowadays the city is a metropolis of 2 million inhabitants, Havana’s old centre retains a remarkable blend of Baroque and neoclassical monuments, and a uniform assembly of private houses with balconies, arcades, wrought-iron gates and interior courtyards. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Old Havana (Spanish: La Habana Vieja) contains the core of the original city of Havana. The positions of the original Havana city walls are the current boundaries of Old Havana. Old Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the name also refers to one of the municipalities of the city of Havana, Cuba, with the latter's boundaries extending to the south and west beyond the original city. --Wikipedia.
