Description: Bringing together multiple strands of creativity and innovation in both architectural form and structural design, the Sydney Opera House, inaugurated in 1973, is a grand architectural creation of the 20th century. The site has had made an impressive influencial stamp on later architecture, as its urban sculptural qualities are displayed in a picturesque waterscape, at the edge of a peninsula facing the Sydney Harbour. The interior spaces of two main performance halls and restaurant are individually covered by three groups of interlocking vaulted ‘shells’. Sitting on a vast platform, the shell-structures are surrounded by terrace areas which function as pedestrian concourses. An international jury awarded Danish architect Jørn Utzon in 1957, for Sydney Opera House, marking an entirely new approach to building construction. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
The Sydney Opera House is located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as appointed on 28 June 2007. Designed by Jørn Utzon, a Danish architect, the Sydney Opera House is one of the most distinctive and famous 20th century buildings, and one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world. Situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, with parkland to its south and close to the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge, the building and its surroundings form an iconic Australian image. As well as many touring theatre, ballet, and musical productions, the Opera House is the home of Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Symphony. It is administered by the Opera House Trust, under the New South Wales Ministry of the Arts. The Sydney Opera House was the key meeting venue of APEC Australia 2007 in September, 2007 at which time the political leaders of the 21 member states of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation met. --Wikipedia.
