Description: On the islands of Malta and Gozo we can find seven megalithic temples, each having individually developed. Noteworthy for their colossal Bronze Age structures are the two temples of Ggantija on the island of Gozo. The temples of Hagar Qin, Mnajdra and Tarxien on the island of Malta, are inimitable architectural masterpieces, and more so owing to the restricted resources obtainable at the time. The Ta'Hagrat and Skorba complexes demonstrate Malta’s tradition of handing down successful temple-building techniques. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
The Megalithic Temples of Malta is the name used for a group of seven megalithic ensembles located in the Maltese islands of Malta and Gozo. These temples were deemed to be of outstanding universal value that UNESCO declared the collection as a World Heritage Site, under the said name. Initially, the World Heritage status was given only to the two temples forming the Ġgantija complex in the island of Gozo in 1980. The nomination was extended in 1992, to include the six other ancient temples located throughout in the island of Malta. Temples that have garnered the international citation are: Ġgantija, Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra, Ta' Ħagrat, Ta' Skorba, Tarxien. --Wikipedia.
