Description: In the late 3rd and early 4th century Emperor Caius Valerius Galerius Maximianus commissioned the Late Roman fortified palace compound and memorial complex of Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius, which was positioned in eastern Serbia. It was named after the Emperor's mother, and was thus known as Felix Romuliana. The site is composed of fortifications, the palace (north-western area of the complex), basilicas, temples, hot baths, a memorial complex, and a tetrapylon. The site stands as an exceptional witness to the Roman building tradition manifested by the period’s ideology (the Second Tetrachy). The group of buildings is also distinctive in its interlacing of its ceremonial and memorial functions. The tetrapylon which is placed on the crossroads between the worldly fortification and palace on the one side and the other-worldly mausoleums and sanctification monuments on the other, stresses the relation between this site’s two spatial ensembles. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
