Description: Covering 55 ha San Marino Historic Centre and Mount Titano, this consists of Mount Titano and the city’s historic centre which, dates back to the 13th century when the republic was founded as a city-state. San Marino is celebrated as a demonstration to a free republic’s continuity since the Middle Ages. The inscribed city centre comprises fortification towers, walls, gates and bastions, as well as a 19th century neo-classical basilica, 14th and 16th century convents, and the 19th century Palazzo Publico, as well as the Titano Theatre of the 18th century. The property epitomizes a still inhabited historical centre that preserves all its institutional functions. Owing to its spot on top of Mount Titano, urban transformations that have cropped up from the advent of the industrial era to today did not affect it. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Monte Titano is the highest peak in San Marino, in the Apennines. It stands at 749 m and is located immediately to the east of the capital, San Marino.According to legend, Saint Marinus founded San Marino as a village on the limestone mountain. The mountain has three peaks; on each are The Three Towers of San Marino. --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
