Description: | The Straits of Malacca historic cities, Melaka and George Town, developed over a period of 500 years of trading and cultural exchanges between the East and West. The Asian and European influences have bestowed a particular multicultural heritage upon the towns that is both tangible and intangible. Melaka’s government buildings, churches, squares and fortifications express the early stages of this history deriving from the 15th-century Malay sultanate and the Portuguese and Dutch periods that began in the early 16th century. George Town on the other hand, with its residential and commercial buildings, represents the British era from the late 18th century. The two towns are inimitable architectural and cultural townscapes devoid of a parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
