| Description: | Three national parks: Gunung Leuser National Park, Kerinci Seblat National Park and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park encompass this 2.5 million hectare site, the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra. The site possesses an enormous potential for long term conservation of Sumatra’s unique and diverse biota, and thus save numerous endangered species. The protected area is marked with an estimated 10,000 plant species, counting 17 endemic genera; over 200 mammal species; and around 580 bird species of which 465 are resident and 21-endemic. Among the mammal species, 22 are not found anywhere else outside the archipelago and 15 are only found in the Indonesian region, among them the endemic Sumatran orangutan. | Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra site was listed in UNESCO World Heritage list in 2004. It comprises three Indonesian national parks on the island of Sumatra — Gunung Leuser National Park, Kerinci Seblat National Park and the Southern Hills National Park.
