Description: The major trading centres of the Hanseatic League of the 14th and 15th centuries sit on the Baltic coast of northern Germany. The medieval towns of Wismar and Stralsund became Swedish administrative and defensive centres for the German territories in the 17th and 18th centuries. They played a role in the development of the distinguishing Brick Gothic building types and techniques around the Baltic region, as demonstrated through a number of significant brick cathedrals, the Town Hall of Stralsund, and a string of residential, commercial and crafts houses, characterizing its evolution over several centuries. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
Stralsund is a city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, situated at the southern coast of the Strelasund (a sound of the Baltic Sea separating the island of Rügen from the mainland). --Wikipedia. Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.
